I would say that most homes that I go into have very few pieces of artwork in the bathroom, and I think that is a mistake. Art offers a calming effect and with the effort that many people are putting into the overall design of the bathrooms these days, why would you not want that cherry on top of the sundae, so to speak.
Art and the Overall Bathroom Design
For me, the art is about making something else in the bathroom pop. Be it the fixtures, a flower, or even the bathroom rugs.
Don’t Use…
Before we get into the actual art, let’s talk about what you should not be putting into the bathroom. Do not use art that will be damaged by water or steam. You also want to avoid any pieces of art that have small, sharp pieces. If they fall off, they could easily wind up in someone’s foot. Avoid delicate art that could easily break if inadvertently bumped into.
Do Use…
Art that is safe and durable is always the best bet. Things are bound to take a tumble from time to time, so you make sure you are choosing pieces that will not easily break. When it comes to pictures, canvases are great, and very inexpensive.
Canvases and Photographs
Photographs are always a safe bet, but you should have them in frames with a glass covering to protect them from the steam and water. As I just noted above, I prefer to have the prints made up into a canvas. They are super easy to hang and very durable. I have six pieces that have been hanging in my bathroom for almost a decade and are no worse for wear.
Sculptures and Pottery
Both of these are great for the bathroom, just do not overdo it. If you have a double sink, a small vase or urn with some color is a great way to draw some attention to a certain color or the fixtures themselves. These can also be used to hold potpourri.
Plants
Depending upon the theme of the bathroom, plants can also be incorporated into the overall design. This is very effective with a beach or Asian theme. I also happen to think certain plants work very well for people that are setting up their bathroom for a spa effect.
This is something I just think most people tend to forget about in the bathroom. Again, I cannot tell you how many people walk into my bathroom and see the multiple pieces of art hanging and make a comment about it. It is just not something a lot of people think about but when they see it, they love it.
