What is the one thing that most of us complain about when we move into a new apartment or home? We all want more closet space! I honestly don’t remember the last time I moved into a house or apartment, and after unpacking, we had enough closet space to set everything up the way we wanted to have it set up. The beauty of building a custom home is that you can finally do that.
Closets Have Grown in Size
Remember when you were a kid and you were happy to have a closet that was three feet wide? As adults, our needs obviously increase, especially for those of us who need an additional wardrobe for work. In modern-home building, closets are rapidly expanding, not only offering proper storage and display for clothing, but now feature enough space to get dressed and even a makeup table for the wife. You go into the closet and come out ready for work or a fancy dinner.
How Have Closets Changed?
One of the most significant changes we have seen in recent years is a departure from the standard single pole and shelf to compartmentalized closet structures. People want to be able to organize their clothing by colors or use, meaning work, casual, and an elegant night out. No more rooting through tightly packed dresses or suits, but instead have the ability to see the entire wardrobe to pick out the winning outfit.
Closet organizers are gold in the home market, but if you are building the home from the ground up, you will likely want that organization built into the closet. For instance, we see more requests specifically for shoe and handbag displays. Drawer systems are put into place for items such as t-shirts, underwear, and socks, while more hanging bars are desired to comfortably hang all clothing so the clothes are not tightly pressed together, resulting in wrinkles, and just making it difficult to see your options.
Additional Options
Because of the space that is now being dedicated to closets, we are seeing a lot more requests to create space for personal accessories, hidden hampers, and additional shelving space for folded clothes.
As we noted above, having a dressing station and makeup station is also becoming very popular, which usually means specialty mirrors and additional lighting. And yes, because everyone always wants to be connected, there are even requests for TVs, computer stations, and additional Wi-Fi access in the closet spaces. After all, you have to have great internet and the proper lighting to show off that new dress on social media, right?
As a side note, this closet trend is not limited to the bedroom. We are seeing far more complicated designs in the kitchen as well. In fact, that is going to be the next topic that we tackle.
