Having a custom home is an amazing experience, as you get to bring the home to life from the ground up, and that would include filling it with the right furniture. Now, we normally talk about building tips here, but we also like to address some of the aesthetics of decorating a new home.
Picking the Right Decor
This is something that seems fairly obvious and while taking a contrarian approach may work in some situations, that is usually not the case. For instance, with the right pieces, you can pull off a log cabin with ultra-modern furniture. However, most of the time, you want to see consistency, so you would not pick antique furniture in a modern design of sharp lines and minimalistic colors, such as black, white, and gray.
The idea behind the type of furnishings you use should be to complement and accentuate the overall design of the home, which allows each area to flow rather than cause a sharp contrast.
Quality and Textures
If you have spent all this money to have a custom home built, the furnishings inside are not the time to skimp. There is nothing worse than thinking that you scored a great deal on a piece only to find out a few years later that it is falling apart because it is a piece of junk or poorly made furniture.
You also need to take into account how the furnishings are going to be used. For instance, do you have children or pets in the house? If so, certain areas of the home are going to get more wear and tear, so you will need to take that into account when deciding on how to furnish the home.
For instance, if you have cats in the home, do you think buying a leather sofa would be a good idea? If there are small children in the home, having glass fixtures and hard-angled furniture may not be the best bet until the children get a little older and can navigate the home a little easier and safer.
Using the Rooms Dimensions
Believe it or not, one of the more common challenges for people is picking the right furniture to fit the size of the room. For instance, if you have a 10×10 bedroom, is a California King the right size bed or would a queen be a better choice? Or if you have a massive 25×25 living room, would you choose a regular sofa and loveseat or do you think a larger sectional would be a good fit?
This even goes down to things like the TV… you want to have a screen that fits the room or does not overwhelm it.
These are just a few of the key factors that you will need to consider while decorating the interior of the home.
