You have this beautiful new home, and now you have to fill it with furniture. This is a big decision because the wrong décor can ruin even the most beautifully of designed homes. Today, we are going to try to guide you through some basic principles of picking out the right furniture for the home.
Pick the Right Theme
This should be fairly obvious, so I will use an extreme example to make my point. You would not have a modern design with greys, blacks, and whites filled with country-style furnishings. At the same time, you would not be using modern furniture in a log cabin. You surely had a design in mind when you had the home designed, so the type of furnishings you choose should complement those design features.
For a more contemporary home, use furniture with angular features and metallic accents. For a more casual design, go with “cozy” and more natural designed furnishings. Take advantage of the natural design aspects of the home that were incorporated into the build.
Textures and Textiles
There are going to be times when you are wowed by a piece of furniture only to find out a year or two later what you bought was a piece of junk. Pay attention to the textures and textiles in the furniture design if you want something that will put up with daily usage and stand the test of time. There are other considerations to make as well, such as if you have pets or children in the home and how they will be using this furniture. For instance, getting a leather couch in a house that has two cats is not exactly a smart decision. If you are looking for longevity, choose furniture with nylon, olefin, and polyester over fabrics like cotton and wool.
Complement the Layout of the Room
Would you want to use a king-sized bed in a room that was only 9’x11’? Or how about having only a love seat in a living space that was 20’x20’. You see what we are getting at here? When you are choosing the furniture, take into account the space so you don’t have something to big in a little space or something to small in a large space.
Keep these three factors in mind when you are furnishing your home, and you should do just fine.
