Design trends are constantly changing, but the trick is to focus on the trends that will not disappear in a flash, especially if you are looking for resale value. Examples of “trends” that may fade now are what we consider “risky” colors for rooms, whereas trends that will be safe would be sustainable and eco-friendly materials and smart-home upgrades.
Sustainability
This may be a “trend,” but it will be the norm as we continue to move forward. This is something we are seeing the government get more involved in, especially at the state level, so you could be ahead of the curve on this by starting to integrate sustainable and eco-friendly building materials into your new home construction.
Multi-functional Rooms and Spaces
When we talk about home design, we often talk about looking into your future. For example, that child’s room could be converted into a home theater once the kids leave the house. But we can also turn rooms into different spaces in the now, such as a home office that can be turned into a reading nook or home relaxation area just by moving a few things around.
Bold Accents for Pop
Rather than painting an entire wall purple or red, use neutral colors for the backdrop, but incorporate bold accents that can make the room pop. For example a bold-colored piece of art, furniture, or just cushions for the sofa.
As I mentioned before, in my dining room, which uses a very light grey paint, we have a darker grey, farmhouse-style table, with black, red, and white vases, bright red flowers, and a black and white print on the wall except for the tree, which has bright red leaves. The red leaves in the print draw out the red flowers and the red in the vases on the table, pulling the whole room together.
Biophilic Design
This is a trend that is surely not going away anytime soon. This is the process of connecting one form of life with another, in this case, us with nature. You can do this by using big-picture windows, natural wood accents, stone textures, indoor plants, and water features. Think of well-being and tranquility as the key influencers behind this particular design trend.
Smart Home Technology
This is only going to grow as we move forward. We already see homes that are completely integrated. While this may not be in your budget now, it is well worth having a discussion with your designer and builder to ensure you can add more features using this technology as time passes.
