We just posted an article to get the home ready for fall, so we figured we might as well just slide right into winter as well. This is not so much a change of décor, as there will be plenty of that come Christmas. These are more general spruce-up tips to get ready for the pending traffic that will be coming through the home, especially if you are THE home where all the entertaining happens over the holiday season.
Time to Donate
Christmas is the season of giving, right, so why not declutter your home and figure out what has been sitting around that can be donated, and this includes going into those closets and getting rid of all those clothes you never wear. If you have items that are still in good shape and desirable, what better way to generate some extra Christmas cash than by putting some things up for sale on eBay.
Once the rooms have been decluttered, it is time for the winter refresh (just a season term for spring cleaning). In all likelihood, the windows have now been open for several months and before you shut them back down for the winter, get all that outside dust and pollen out of the home.
New Décor for the Winter Season
Now, as I stated above, we are not looking to redo the entire home like we do for the spring and fall, but you may want to change some things out with the holiday season coming along. As I noted in a previous post, changing out wall canvases is quick, easy, and really adds pop to the season décor. Remember, the key to this is buying canvases that are the same size for each area so you just need to add new Command strips to the back of the new canvases. You pull one down and pop up the new one… easy peasy.
Another thing that will likely need to be changed out is some of your plant life. Thanksgiving and Christmas means pumpkins, poinsettias, ferns, and cactus. BUT, if you have pets, be sure to check for which plants are poisonous to pets. If you only have dogs, you can keep the dangerous plants out of reach, but cats can get into anything, so avoid buying any plants that are harmful to pets if you have felines roaming around the home.
Time to Entertain
When we have discussed different floor plans, you notice we often discuss how you will be entertaining, specifically in how the kitchen is set up. If your custom home was designed with this in mind, you probably won’t have to make many changes. However, if not, you may want to consider moving some furniture around and adding high tops and chairs that can be stored after the holiday season.
