When it comes to colors, bathrooms have traditionally been more institutional, meaning whites and blacks. That is changing rather dramatically. While that “clean” look is still very much in demand, we are seeing more people step out in terms of colors to make their bathrooms pop and not just be another room.
The Bathroom Palette
Rather than bland white, black, and grey, we see more earth tones integrated into this design and those “institutional” colors. Because more organic materials are finding their way into bathroom design, burnt oranges and very rich and deep browns are becoming more popular. Shading is also finding its way into designs, which allows darker tile and cabinets that can be offset by the sink, toilet, tub, and mirrors.
As we have noted in other posts, greens are about as hot as it gets right now, especially in the bathroom where they work very well with more organic and repurposed materials. Certain shades of green also work very well with gray tones, which often means you do not have to worry about redoing existing tile work if you are remodeling.
Believe it or not, wallpaper is also making a comeback in bathroom designs. This means even more vibrant color combinations can be used and theming out the bathroom, which we often see in vacation homes. Not only that, but many people prefer wallpaper over hanging artwork in the bathroom.
Now, I am more of a traditionalist mixed in with a little modernism, so I still prefer gray with a splash of color. In our bathroom, as noted before, we do varying shades of gray but have some artwork that is black, white, and grey, with a splash of red to add pop. On the counter, we added a vase with red flowers that bring everything together.
For a more vintage look, blues and greens are an option that will work well with antique furniture and wood accents. It can offer a more modern look to a rustic design.
The one must-have feature in any new bathroom is a soaking tub, so don’t be shy about playing around with different colors for the tub to make it the focus of the room. This is also a great way to pull a certain color out of the other décor. For instance, a dark grey soaking tub can pull out a grey pinstripe on the wallpaper or tile. Or, go the opposite way with a white soaking tub to break up a bathroom design that has greens or earth tones.
